When making a purchase, the UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) value indicated on the hangtag should serve as the primary criterion; typically, the UPF value must exceed 40, and the UVA transmittance rate must be less than 5%. Fabric composition and color also influence sun protection effectiveness. Among synthetic fibers, polyester generally offers slightly superior sun protection compared to nylon. Thicker, tightly woven fabrics (such as denim or corduroy) provide better protection, though their breathability must be weighed against the specific wearing environment.

From a technical standpoint, "original yarn" sun protection technology has emerged as the market mainstream. This technique involves embedding sun-blocking agents directly into the fibers during the spinning stage. Compared to traditional surface-coating processes, original-yarn fabrics mitigate the issue of sun-protection efficacy diminishing due to washing or abrasion; they are highly durable against repeated washing and resolve common issues associated with traditional coated fabrics, such as excessive weight and poor breathability.

Various products incorporate specialized technologies. For instance, some products utilize unique fiber cross-sections to enhance UV reflection, thereby achieving higher UPF ratings; others feature fabrics with dual dry-and-wet performance characteristics or integrate cooling functionalities. Furthermore, through specific technical treatments, certain fabrics claim to withstand a significantly higher number of wash cycles.

To extend the lifespan of UV-protective fabrics and maintain their protective efficacy, proper care is essential. It is advisable to minimize washing frequency and to hand-wash gently in cold water, avoiding vigorous scrubbing as well as the use of bleach or fabric softeners. After washing, avoid direct exposure to strong sunlight; instead, lay the garment flat to dry in a cool, well-ventilated area. Store the garment in a dry environment. While the performance of standard coated fabrics may degrade after multiple washes, high-quality original-yarn sun-protection fabrics can withstand numerous machine washes while maintaining stable protective capabilities. It is recommended to periodically inspect the condition of the garment.
