Unveiling the Basics of Clothing Fabrics

Mar 06, 2026

As the core material in garment manufacturing, apparel fabric not only defines a garment's style and character but also directly influences the visual presentation of its color and silhouette. Fabrics are derived from a diverse range of raw materials-including cotton, linen, silk, and chemical fibers-and feature various structural weaves such as plain, twill, satin, and rib. In garment production, fabric typically holds a pivotal position; as it often accounts for over 30% of the total cost, the impact of its quality on the finished product cannot be overlooked. Fabrics can be broadly categorized into three main groups: woven fabrics, knitted fabrics, and natural furs, skins, and leathers (along with their synthetic imitations). It should be noted that non-woven fabrics are relatively uncommon in the apparel sector and are therefore excluded from the scope of this discussion.

Major Fabric Classifications
Fabrics are classified into three primary categories: woven, knitted, and natural furs/skins; non-woven fabrics are not discussed here. Woven fabrics encompass four main sub-categories: bleached, dyed, printed, and yarn-dyed fabrics. Knitted fabrics, based on basic knit stitches and structures, are commonly utilized in sportswear, underwear, and similar items. Natural furs, skins, and leathers are renowned for their exceptional thermal insulation properties and luxurious aesthetic.
